This is a Dawn Redwood which is growing at the Bailey Arboretum on Long Island in Lattingtown, New York. The Dawn Redwood was believed to have been extinct for 200 million years when a small stand was discovered in China during World War II. In 1948 Harvard University sent an expedition to bring back seedlings and gave several to Mr. Bailey, who had a reputation for being able to grow anything. He had been successfully planting exotic, non-native plants on his property since 1911. At 90 feet, this tree is one of the tallest of its kind. It's girth - more than 15 feet around - is the largest of any Dawn Redwood in the world, according to the International Metasequoia Society.

Welcome to my gallery, and thank you so much for taking a look at my work. I am a native Long Islander, and while I studied photography in college, it took a back burner to my life afterwards. Having become an empty nester I once again found my love of photography and have now been behind the lens of my camera for many years. I love macro photography, particularly of flowers, because of all the hidden beauty in the details, but am happy creating all sorts of art with my camera. All Rights Reserved.
